The art of bonsai has grown substantially in popularity in the western world over the last 20 years & is now a pastime for millions of people around the world. Thesei trees are not just plants but elaborate works of art. The quality of a bonsai tree is measured on how well it portrays nature in miniature form.
Bonsai trees were first grown in China approximately 1500 years ago. It was not until 300 years later that they came to Japan.
Originally they were small trees collected from the mountainous regions of these two countries. These trees had been dwarfed naturally by the harsh conditions of their natural habitat. Planted in ceramic pots they were displayed in and around people's homes.
It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that iti was introduced to western civilization. In 1909 they were the focal point of an exhibition in London. Since then the art of bonsai has grown in popularity worldwide.
The pot of a 'bonsai' is not just a container in which to grow the tree. You must consider the size & balance of the pot in relation to your 'bonsai'. In order to enhance the poise of the height & width of the 'bonsai', the pot must be in scale with the tree.
The overall character of the design is also affected by the positioning of the tree within the pot. It helps presentation to be able to balance the texture & character of the pot with the style of tree. Elegant trees look finest in refined glazed pots. Whereas rugged trees look most impressive in a rough or coarse pot.
Pots made from ceramics are most suitable for outdoor use as they are frost-proof. Plastic pots are fine when training trees, but an appropriate ceramic pot will greatly enhance the overall presentation of the tree.
Pots need to have satisfactory draining holes, so that any surplus water can escape freely. A pot should have small feet to slightly raise itself above the surface it is sitting on. Along with allowing air to flow freely around the pot, this also assists drainage.
